Application of special carbon black in metallurgy

During the steelmaking process, molten steel needs to be poured into a molten steel tank lined with refractory materials before ingot injection. Since the molten steel needs to stay in the tank for a period of time, part of the heat needs to be dissipated.

In this way, condensation will easily occur on the surface of the molten steel, and residual steel may also be formed at the bottom of the tank. To this end, the surface of the molten steel can be covered with a layer of carbon black. Since carbon black contains carbon High, slow burning but high calorific value, less ash impurities, and very small apparent density. Therefore, after being added to the molten steel tank, it will burn quickly and evenly on the surface of the molten steel, playing a very good role in heat preservation, thereby eliminating surface condensation. and the problem of residual steel at the bottom of the tank.

During the continuous casting process, steelmaking fluxes are added to isolate the air, protect the cooling device and remove impurities in the pig iron. The flux contains inorganic particles such as calcium silicate, carbon black, etc. The amount of carbon black added is about 1% to 5%, which can adjust the melting speed.

During the casting process, special carbon black can be used as a release agent. If the carbon black dispersion is coated on the surface of the model, the casting can be smooth and easy to remove. When casting iron and copper, use a water dispersion mixed with special carbon black and coke powder (100-300 mesh) to coat the iron or copper water channel to speed up the flow of molten iron or copper. In order to prevent the temperature of the outer layer of molten iron or copper from lowering, carbon black and mica powder can be mixed and sprinkled to prevent oxidation and maintain heat.

During the casting process, the casting model is prone to cracking due to the intrusion of molten metal. In order to enhance the resistance to chipping, inorganic substances can be added to the molding sand. Carbonaceous materials such as asphalt powder, graphite powder, coal powder, etc. are often used as additives. Adding furnace carbon black has the following advantages over the above materials: adding a small amount can increase the strength of the mold and facilitate transportation; the sand mold shakeout is reduced; and sulfur dioxide does not occur. Toxic and odorous gases; can reduce the amount of water glass.

To sum up, in the process of steelmaking and casting, special carbon black mainly has the following functions: making the surface of hot metal a reducing aerosol to prevent oxidation, acting as an insulator to reduce the cooling rate of metal, and reducing the rate of metal intrusion or penetration into the model. .

Therefore, the main performance requirements for special carbon black are: low sulfur content, good wettability and dispersion. Generally, special carbon black for metallurgy can be used.
