5 major properties of carbon black pigment determine Inks printing quality !

The impact of Carbon Black Pigment on ink printing suitability depends primarily on the pigment’s dispersion, hiding power, apparent volume ratio, oil absorption and other properties. This article analyses them one by one.

1、Dispersion

Dispersion refers to the size of carbon black pigment particles. The pigment particles in the ink must be completely submerged in the connecting material within the ink film, the size of the pigment particles can not exceed the thickness of the ink film, otherwise it will affect the luster of the printed matter, the smaller the particles, the higher the dispersion, the greater the colour saturation of the ink. Gravure printing for the network cavity handling printing, the pigment dispersion requirements are higher.

2、Colouring power

Colouring power refers to the ability of a certain pigment to influence the colour of the mixed pigment after it is mixed with other pigments. Any pigment which is easy to fade when mixed with white substance will have weak colouring power. Speciality carbon black with strong colouring power should be chosen for ink formulation, which can be used for printing to achieve the effect of using less ink and drying fast. For the high speed gravure printing which has high requirements for ink dryness, this is crucial.

3、Concealment power

Concealing power refers to the ability of pigment to conceal the base colour. Whether the ink has hiding power depends on the refractive index of the carbon black pigment and the refractive index ratio of the connecting material. When this ratio is 1, the pigment is transparent; when this ratio is greater than 1, the pigment is not transparent, i.e., it has concealing power.

Different printing products have different requirements on the hiding power of pigment, such as printing iron ink requires carbon black pigment to have strong hiding power to avoid the bottom colour from being exposed, while four-colour overprinting ink requires pigment to have high brightness, so that the ink superimposed together can reach a better effect of colour reduction.

4、Visual volume

The apparent specific volume refers to the volume occupied by each kilogram of heavy pigment, which is expressed by cubic centimetre. The same carbon black pigment with different particles has different apparent volume. The larger the apparent volume of pigment is, the smaller its specific gravity is, and it is not easy to precipitate in the connecting material, so the stability of ink is good.

5、Oil absorption

Oil absorption refers to the amount of oil that can be absorbed by a certain amount of pigment, and it is calculated by the number of grams of linseed oil needed to make 100g of pigment stick together closely.
