Selecting Carbon Black Pigment : The characteristics of the Coating

Paint is a coating used to cover, protect, decorate or modify any substance. The characteristics of the coating determine the indicators required to use Carbon Black Pigment .

Paint color

It has been observed that the color of paint depends on the optical properties in the pigment. Most pigments selectively absorb and scatter light from a certain spectrum in the visible light range. Carbon black pigments can be used to improve a paint’s ability to absorb light.

The addition of carbon black pigment will mainly reduce the brightness value of the paint color. This property can also be used to achieve the desired blackness when carbon black is used as the sole pigment or for darker shades. The fully dispersed carbon black pigment phase is a neutral to blue phase, while the insufficiently dispersed carbon black is a brown phase.

Paint gloss

The gloss of paint is a reflection of its surface roughness. The surface roughness of the cured coating film is affected by the type of paint, solvent, wetting agent, pigment, surface chemistry of color, color concentration and degree of dispersion. Carbon Black Pigment is an absorbent in paints and often results in reduced gloss. The more paint the carbon black requires, the greater the tendency for gloss to decrease. Therefore, the way to improve gloss is to choose a carbon black pigment that has good dispersion and requires a low amount of paint.

The fluidity of paint

The viscosity of a paint is designed by breaking down its end use and application method. Generally speaking, increasing the specific surface area, structure and concentration of pigments will lead to an increase in paint viscosity. The granularity of carbon black and its affinity for dispersed paint will increase the viscosity of the paint itself, making the system non-Newtonian. Surface-treated carbon black can reduce the viscosity and improve the fluidity of the coating.

Paint durability

The ability of a coating to withstand exposure to harsh environments is called durability. Carbon black Pigment has extremely high absorbance of all wavelengths of light; therefore, it provides coatings with excellent UV durability. Fine-grained carbon black can absorb more UV light than coarse-grained carbon black. When UV protection performance is required, fine carbon black is better. Increasing the amount of carbon black can also improve ultraviolet absorption.

Reducing impurities in pigments is also an important measure to improve the durability of coating films.
