One of the factors that determine the performance of Pigment carbon black: average primary particle size
The average primary particle size of pigment carbon black is often called particle size, which is one of the important indicators of carbon black.
The size of carbon black particles is largely determined by its production process. Carbon black produced by the furnace process is the process with the largest variation in the primary particle size of pigment carbon black: from 10 nanometers to 80 nanometers. The average particle size and particle size distribution of primary particles fundamentally determine the performance of pigment carbon black, especially its blackness and tinting strength.
The second factor that determines the performance of carbon black: structure
The degree of aggregation of carbon black original particles is often referred to as “structure”. Mainly divided into two types, one is high structure carbon black (carbon black with high aggregation degree is called high structure carbon black); the other is low structure carbon black (carbon black with low aggregation degree is called low structure carbon black).
The primary particles of pigment carbon black do not exist in a separate isolated state, they also form polymelts and aggregates. The aggregation degree of furnace carbon black can be adjusted through changes in the process; while the aggregation degree of contact carbon black is difficult to control due to its open process (experienced technical personnel are required to adjust here).
The third factor that determines the performance of carbon black: surface activity
Carbon black is mainly composed of carbon elements, with a carbon content of about 90% to 99%. It also contains small amounts of oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, sulfur and other elements.
The carbon black surface activity mentioned here refers to the number of oxygen-containing surface groups generated on the surface of carbon black particles for acidic carbon black. These acidic surface groups are mainly carboxyl groups, phenolic hydroxyl groups, quinone groups, lactone groups, etc.; Alkaline carbon black refers to the alkaline oxides on the surface of carbon black, which affect the physical and chemical properties of carbon black, such as wetting and dispersion, catalytic activity and electrochemical properties.
