There are many factors that affect the dispersion of pigment carbon black, including the particle size of carbon black, the structure of carbon black, the production process of carbon black, etc.
However, the surface chemical properties of carbon black have little impact on the dispersion of pigment carbon black.
All carbon blacks have oxygen functional groups (such as carboxyl, quinone, lactone and phenol groups) on their surface, and their content changes with production conditions.
In industry, such surface functional groups are collectively called volatile components and are expressed as the weight loss percentage of carbon black samples after heating to 90°C (ASTMD1629-60). Some carbon blacks have a deliberately oxidized surface. Generally, various oxidants are used for post-treatment to increase its volatile content, so that high filling amounts in liquid materials can be ensured to obtain satisfactory rheology.
Another beneficial effect of high volatile content in liquid materials is that it can improve dispersion and dispersion stability. Oxygen-containing functional groups act as surfactants in improving the wetting properties of Pigment carbon black. In many material systems, compared with low-volatile carbon black, high-volatile carbon black shows superior dispersion when other properties are similar.
When purchasing Pigment carbon black, the dispersion of oxidized carbon black is better than that of non-oxidized carbon black. However, the functional groups of oxidized carbon black are different when applied to different industries.
